Growing up on an Amish dairy farm, Steve learned the value of hard work early on – waking up at 4:30 AM every morning to help milk cows and spending long hours in the fields behind a team of horses. That foundation of discipline and dedication would later shape how he approached every project and client.
As the family farm required less help, Steve found himself drawn toward construction. At just 18, he quickly developed a passion for hands-on building and problem-solving. By 24, while preparing for marriage, he joined Mid Atlantic Timber Frames, where he gained invaluable experience in timber framing and management, working on projects that strengthened his appreciation for craftsmanship and teamwork.
By the end of 2019, Steve and his wife moved to Quarryville, PA. The long commute to work began to weigh on him, sparking a dream to start something closer to home. A conversation with his brother-in-law Elmer turned that dream into reality, and River Edge Builders was born.
Over the next three years, the business flourished, but Steve felt called toward a new vision and a renewed focus on the types of projects he loved most. In the fall of 2022, Conowingo Builders officially began. With just a truck, a few tools, and support from his wife and friends, Steve took on garage and pole barn projects himself, one build at a time.
Three months later, John Stoltzfus joined as the company’s first employee. Together, the two worked side by side for the next year and a half, building horse barns, pole barns, and custom wood structures across Pennsylvania and beyond.
By the summer of 2024, business was booming. After much discussion and shared vision, John became a 25% partner, helping lead the next chapter of growth for Conowingo Builders.
